The Most Prevalent Childhood Disability

It is estimated that around 10% of children starting school in the UK will have Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

This means 2-3 children in each class.

Research from The Communication Trust shows that children with SLCN represent the most prevalent type of special educational need amongst UK primary school pupils with Education and Health Care Plans (EHCP).

Here at SLCN Stories, our purpose is to share inclusive children's books that are aimed at raising awareness and supporting children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.

Children with SLCN need to be able to access stories that reflect their successes, barriers and specific experiences.

Discovering and reading stories that reflect how it feels to go to speech therapy and practice their sounds and words. Stories that reflect how it feels to not be understood, and stories that promote strategies to support communication.

We want to highlight new books so that they are easy to find for parents, carers and schools. As part of this we are also donating children's books to schools in the UK through our Sharing Stories Project.

Our hope is that SLCN Stories contributes to celebrating and sharing the experiences of children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs through raising awareness, highlighting inclusive stories and directly donating resources to schools.
